Halcyon is a small Asheville practice — three clinicians, real fifty-minute sessions, and no waitlist theater. Individual therapy, couples work, and EMDR, in person or by video, at whatever pace feels possible right now.
Before anything else
Wanting to feel better is reason enough to start.
Services
However you arrive, it starts with the same unhurried conversation.
Weekly fifty-minute sessions for anxiety, depression, grief, burnout, or the sense that something's off you can't quite name. You set the pace; we keep the thread.
For couples stuck in the same argument, and couples who've gone quiet. We help you hear each other again — no referee whistle, no scorekeeping, no villain required.
A structured, extensively researched approach for trauma and stuck memories, with our EMDR-trained clinicians. Many people find hard memories gradually lose their charge; we only ever go as fast as feels safe.
The same fifty minutes over secure video, anywhere in North Carolina, Tennessee, or South Carolina. No apps to fight with, no commute — slippers allowed.
What to expect
Three small steps, and none of them lock you in.
Tell us as much or as little as you like. We'll say honestly whether we're the right practice — and who we'd match you with.
Fifty minutes to talk, be heard, and ask questions. You'll leave knowing how your therapist works and whether the room felt right.
Together you'll name what you're working toward and how often to meet — and revisit it openly as things change. Nobody signs up for forever.
The practice
Halcyon is three clinicians who wanted to practice the way therapy works best: small caseloads, unhurried sessions, and the same person in the chair across from you every week. Dr. Maren Oduya works with trauma and EMDR, Sam Whitaker, LMFT sees couples and new parents, and Dr. Elena Brooks focuses on anxiety, grief, and life transitions.
The office is quiet, the chairs are soft, and nobody hands you a clipboard of leading questions. Come early, come tired, come unsure of what you'll say. Every one of us has sat in the other chair too — it's a fine place to begin.
In their words
“I put off calling for two years because I didn't think what I had 'counted.' Maren never once made me feel dramatic. A year later, hard weeks still come — I just meet them differently now.”
“We arrived barely speaking and braced to be blamed. Sam gave us one small thing to do differently in the very first session. We still argue; now we know the way back.”
“EMDR sounded like nonsense to me, and I said so in the consult. I was wrong. The memory that ran my nervous system for a decade is just a memory now. I wish I'd been less stubborn about starting.”
Questions
Insurance, confidentiality, fit — the practical questions, answered plainly.
We're out-of-network, and we make that as painless as we can: you'll get a superbill each month to submit, and many PPO plans reimburse 50–80% of the fee. We'll help you check your benefits during the free call, and we hold a few reduced-fee spots for when money is the obstacle.
Yes. What you share stays in the room, with the narrow legal exceptions every licensed therapist follows — serious risk of harm to yourself or someone else, and abuse of a child or vulnerable adult. We walk through exactly what that means, in plain language, before you share anything.
Then we say so out loud, and nobody's feelings run the show. Fit predicts how therapy goes more than almost anything else, and the research backs that up. If one of the other clinicians — or another practice entirely — would serve you better, we make the introduction ourselves.
There's no set answer, and we won't invent one. Some people come for a few months around one hard thing; others stay longer for deeper work. We review how it's going openly and often — you'll never be left wondering why you're still coming.
For most people and most concerns, video sessions work well, and the research on this is reassuring. A few things — parts of EMDR, some couples work — we may suggest doing in person. We'll always be straight with you about which we'd recommend and why.
Whenever you're ready
No forms, no commitment, and no pressure to tell your whole story to a stranger. Say a little about what's going on, ask us anything, and notice how the conversation feels. If we're not the right fit, we'll help you find the person who is.
